Kevin Sy has taught piano in San Francisco State University, Northern California Music & Art Culture Center, Potrero Hill School of Music, Keyboard Educators, and half a dozen music schools throughout the SF Bay Area. He has worked with hundreds of students, and has extensive experiences in helping students to pass both CM and ABRSM at intermediate advanced levels, often with honors or merits/distinction. Sy also excels in teaching beginners and teach students from age 6 and up. For newcomers, his lessons are designed to broaden students’ musical experiences and develop students’ ability to properly read, execute, and think about music at a deeper level starting from an early stage. He has a thorough knowledge of the pedagogical repertoire and selects the teaching materials carefully for each student.
In addition to teaching piano, Sy teaches music theory for the Certificate of Merit and ABRSM. Sy studied advanced theory and analysis with composer Richard Festinger, and has done extensive research on sonata theory and Renaissance vocal polyphony under Dr. Paul Ellison. He also studied instrumental conducting, first with conductor Martin Seggelke, and later Brad Hogarth. Because of his experiences in multiple fields, Sy is very analytical in his approach to helping students overcoming persistent problems, and he constantly looks for new ways to teach concepts and technique to his students, incorporating technology and new literature in his lessons. Sy is an active contributor on Quora, where his writings and ideas about his teaching philosophy can be read here (link).
